"I've had my share of wild bars, I think I'll be okay," Kimi retorts, some of his characteristic bravado showing through with a wink thrown in for good measure. Just like old times, huh?
Still, he sobers and stares hard at Kai as he asks, "Are you safe there?" Kai was never a fighter, after all, even if he ran with the 'wilder' boys for a bit before settling into a calmer lifestyle with Aidan et al.
Kai's smile is bright as Kimi throws in a bit of that familiar spirit that he's missed so much. Cheeky little bugger. A snort of laughter breaks through, almost nervous, chortling.
"Oh come on," he murmurs, waving at Kimi. "I'll be fine. I've gotten pretty good at dodging punches, I'll tell you." In fact, he's quietly been taking some hand-to-hand classes on the side without telling anyone. Because he isn't going to quit his job and it's starting to look like he needs to know how to handle himself in a fight.
"I'll believe that when I see it." But Kai's obviously intent on not making it out to be a big deal, so... Kimi will reserve his judgment for until he's seen how the bar is himself.
Kimi does have one last little olive branch to extend, though, as he hesitates before suggesting, "You could train a bit with me while I'm in town. If you want."
"Wow, thanks for the vote of confidence," Kai says with a toothy grin. "I'm not completely helpless, you know."
But the fact that Kimi is offering him something, a way for them to spend time together and maybe even work through some of this nervous tension between them. He's not going to say no to that.
"But yeah, that sounds actually pretty great. The bar has started to be a little hazard and I've been taking some classes but they're not always really applicable to bar fights, you know."
Face scrunching in an exaggerated grimace, Kimi points out, "You never took training seriously, anyway. But all right, let's see if we can get you properly prepared for a throw down. Have you kept up with shooting, at least?"
Kai shrugs a bit. Maybe just to amuse Kimi with antics that are very like him from years back. "I probably have a weapon somewhere. I haven't shot it for years though."
Kimi sighs in mock disappointment and turns his gaze upwards. "I bet whatever it is is rusted and completely unusable now... Once you've found it, pass it to me and I'll fix it up."
Is he playing it up a little to keep breaking that ice? Yes. Is he also offering his help because he cares and maybe wants to tentatively spend more time around Kai? Yes.
"So I should start just shooting the thugs that come to the bar, is that it?" Kai jokes as he leans back in his chair. "But all right, mr. gunsmith, I'll give my piece to you when I find it."
Yes, he's being ridiculous too, because it seems it's working. Something is definitely working and his heart is filling up with warmth because of it. Just let this be real, okay.
