"We were, yes," Aidan confirms with a soft chuckle, a faint shiver going down his spine at that purring tone to Kai's voice. "But I thought I'd just reheat something from the freezer and let you sleep a little longer. Is that all right?"
"Mmn..." Kai finally peels his eyes open properly and gives Aidan a curious look, then pulls up his wrist to look at his watch and snorts softly. "You let me sleep longer."
He pouts a little but there's amusement and fondness lingering behind it. "I guess it has to be all right, doesn't it?"
"You're such a beast," Kai murmurs as Aidan moves away, yawning a little as he moves to sit up as well.
He looks at the man for a moment with sleepy eyes, then smiles again, leaning to brush a kiss to Aidan's cheek before he slinks off the couch, loose limbs and liquid movements.
"All right, darling," he murmurs. "If you want to do that, I'll take a shower then."
Pleased he's being allowed to take care of Kai with minimal fuss, Aidan smiles and gives his hand another warm squeeze before letting the foxy man slink off. It's tempting to follow after him when he's so relaxed and full of that liquid grace, but Aidan holds back, contenting himself with watching after Kai. Later, he reminds himself. Later.
"You do that, love," he coaxes quietly, sighing to himself once Kai's in the bathroom and getting up to do what he said he would.
Shower is unfortunately lonely and Kai makes it a quick affair. He's back with a damp hair and towel around his waist in no time, pressing against Aidan's back as he fusses around the kitchen.
"I missed you in there," he says as he wraps his arms around Aidan's waist, chin dropping to the man's shoulder. "What did you found for us to eat?"
Kai is a filthy tease and Aidan lives in eternal suffering for it, honestly. He sighs when he glances back and sees his lover is indeed naked except for the towel and gives him a look that a mixture of put out and amused and fond all at once.
"Lovely as you look like this, not you, unfortunately," he huffs, shaking his head, finishing up on putting the water to boil on the stove. "We've got some tortellini left from last week, so I'll cook those and toss them through a salad for us. There's some grilled chicken from last night, too, so I'll cut that up to put through, as well..."
Simple and not too heavy so neither of them will be feeling too weighed down as they head into their work.
He then nods to the coffeemaker. "That's almost done, so perhaps you could go put on some clothes before I decide to be irresponsible and make use of you being naked when we really don't have the time for it?"
Laughing, Kai leans in to kiss Aidan's cheek before pulling back.
"All right, fine." There is a part of Kai that just loves knowing that he's wanted, which makes him quite happy whenever Aidan looks at him like that. Maybe that's why he teases, maybe that is why he flirts and reminds Aidan often enough about his charms. It feels nice being wanted.
Happily, for Aidan, Kai never leaves him hanging for long.
"Food sounds absolutely lovely, though," he says from the doorway, pausing to look back with a smile. "I swear, whenever I tell my customers what kind of 'easy to put together' dinners you make, they all want to marry you."
He shrugs and winks at Aidan before disappearing to the bedroom to find some clothes.
"I tell them they'll have to go through my murdered body, though," he calls back while he fishes out some clothes from the wardrobe.
Aidan smiles to himself as Kai heads off, privately amused at how ridiculous the man can be. Honestly...
Dinner is easy to throw together, thankfully, given Aidan has long grown into the habit of preparing several things in advance in bulk for them to pick and choose from over the course of the week, if not the whole month. By the time Kai is dressed and headed back to the kitchen, Aidan's straining the pasta out and giving it a light toss in olive oil. "Could you make the dressing for me?" he asks as he sets the tortellini aside to cool a bit, chicken brought out to be chopped up to be tossed through the salad.
And, because he's a loving boyfriend like that, he washes his hands and gets the coffee poured out for both of them, setting a mug down by Kai's arm with a little kiss to his cheek before resuming with the dinner prep.
Returning, Kai has already dressed up in work clothes. Jeans and t-shirt that reads 'Roadhouse' at the back and front. His hair is a careless wave and he smells faintly of cologne as he slides his hand across Aidan's back while passing him in the kitchen.
"Of course," he replies, fishing out some oils and lemon from the fridge. "Do you want to go to the cemetery tomorrow?" he asks as he works, fishing out a mixing bottle and some spices, the usual. "We could take some flowers to the graves." Both his mum's and Aidan's parents.
Aidan tries not to make a big fuss of it, but a part of him is quietly relieved that Kai has suggested it and isn't obviously distressed. It had taken a while to get to this point, and he's admittedly proud that Kai got there in the end, and he wordlessly conveys as much by pressing a kiss to the bartender's other cheek.
"Sounds great," Kai replies with a small smile as he starts to prep the dressing, peering a little as Aidan leans in to kiss his cheek. "Get some of that good morning sex in before sleeping well and good to the afternoon."
He gives his lover a wink that's a lot brighter than one could have expected from him some time ago. But he's going to be in a wonderful mood as long as this truce with Kimi is going to continue.
Smiling, Aidan takes the dressing from Kai once it's finished, finishing in tossing the whole salad together before bringing it to the table. "Get the plates and forks for us before you tempt me into skipping right ahead to the sex, love," he huffs.
But once everything is set down and ready, Aidan slips around to gently put a hand to Kai's chin, drawing him into a warm, lingering kiss. It's the least they can have after all this gentle teasing and promises of a lovely homecoming, later.
Kai hums into the kiss, his hands settling onto Aidan's waist as he presses in close and intimate while he's allowed to let the liplock continue. He sighs happily when Aidan pulls away and flashes him a warm, sweet smile.
"Yeah, I'll be thinking dirty things about you the whole work day. And it's all your fault."
He reaches up to brush a few locks of Aidan's hair behind his ear and rubs his fingers through the bushy beard.
Aidan's lips twitch and his lashes sweep down as he lowers his gaze with a little shrug. "All right," he agrees with a soft sigh, taking Kai by the hand and tugging him along to the table. Kai's chair is drawn out for him to sit, and then Aidan takes his own seat as they start to dig in.
"I'm guessing Arie might take the stage tonight at the bar," he comments. "Hopefully that will keep people from getting too rowdy?"
Kai doesn't understand why people think Aidan as closed off or standoffish in the least. The man is the sweetest thing since cotton candy and nothing could convince Kai otherwise. Being seated like a princess is just one of those little things Kai thinks most people know nothing about.
He reaches over to pour them both a drink as he responds, "I hope so. Though, honestly live music usually revs up the regular crowd more. And a famous hometown boy will draw pretty much everyone in, who can get up long enough to walk in. It'll be a busy night."
"Excited and dancing is better than angry and wild," Aidan counters, smiling in quiet gratitude for the drink. "And at least so far, word hasn't spread that Arie's back. So for tonight, at least, you shouldn't have it too crazy in there... I hope."
Though Aidan still worries so perhaps he'll see if he can pull some strings at work to be allowed to leave a little earlier... Or he'd just have to routinely text and call Kai to make sure he's all right.
"I'll be fine, babe," Kai says quietly, reaching over to cup Aidan's cheek within his palm. "I have a whole sturdy counter between me and the customers."
He brushes his thumb over Aidan's cheek before drawing his hand away. "Lets eat. We have to start getting ready in a few."
The hand is caught in Aidan's before it can slip away, allowing the nurse to press a soft kiss to Kai's palm before it's released once more. "All right, love," he agrees softly before turning to the food.
Dinner is a quiet affair and easy to clean up after, thankfully, so Aidan has enough time to have a quick dip in the shower before he's getting changed into his scrubs. "Could you fill up the thermos for me?" he calls over to Kai as he's putting his hair up. "There should be enough coffee left for us both to take..."
Kai has been getting ready too while Aidan is in the shower. He packed the rest of the food into tiny containers for the both of them just in case and filled the thermoses, they sit on the counter waiting. His hair is done just right, wearing a long sleeved button down that has the bar's logo on the back, his name tag on front, just a dash of cologne lingering in the air around him.
He meets Aidan in the foyer, leaning in to kiss his cheek as he hands him a lunch bag with a small, just a little bit teasing smile.
"There's my sexy nurse," he says and flips the hem of Aidan's scrub shirt. "Have a good work day, love."
Aidan's answering smile is fond and amused alike and he leans in to drop a kiss to the corner of Kai's lips, humming, "You too, Mr. Handsome Barkeep. I'll come pick you up after work."
Then he pauses, sniffing just under Kai's ear, and gives a wistful sigh. "You bastard," he accuses with a 'chastising' nip to the earlobe. "You know I love this cologne on you."
"Do I..." Kai hums under his breath, a tiny shiver running down along his back at the nip on his ear. "Well, okay, I do. And I'm shamelessly using it to my advantage..."
He laughs as he tilts his head and presses a soft kiss to Aidan's neck, just over his pulse.
"I'll see you later, babe..."
And then he's gone, stepping out of the door as quickly as he can so he doesn't get stuck again.
It's long past closing hours when Aidan arrives at the Roadhouse, looking weary but otherwise much the same as when he'd gone to work. He gives Damian a little wave, notes Arie chatting still with Ulysse at the bar as they finish the last bit of tidying up, but his attention is soon taken completely by Kai, a warm smile spreading across his features as he approaches his boyfriend.
Kai has already finished tidying up the bar, everything settled for the night and prepped for the next one, tools washed up and extra cuts of lemons and so on trashed, more water added to the ice machine and drink mixes for the next day made ready and put away. He's just carrying the last load of dishes in when he sees Aidan walking to the bar with a beautiful smile.
"Hello love," Kai murmurs as he leans over the bar, jumping up a little to be able to lean over the counter to press a quick kiss to his boyfriend's lips. "I'm just ready, give me two seconds and I'll put these glasses away."
Aidan's smile isn't likely to fade when he's being greeted with a kiss. He just nods as Kai pulls back to finish with glasses, leaning against the bar as he patiently waits. He glances around and notes, "I'm not smelling the stronger cleaning solutions so I'm guessing there was at least a minimum on the bloodshed tonight...?

"I'd apologise, but I'm not sorry at all." Smiling, Aidan kisses Kai's brow and sits up to give him room to move. "You needed the rest."
He strokes some of Kai's hair back and asks, "Do you want to wash up? I'll get the coffee started and see what we've got in the freezer."
